Top Seed Istomin perseveres past young American qualifier
Denis Istomin, the #1 tournament seed, cruised past 17 year old American qualifier Ryan Harrison after a very competitive first set, 7-5, 6-0. Istomin, from Tashkent Uzbekistan, was in a serious car accident in 2001, resulting in his being away from tennis for 2 years. He now carries a #57 world ranking. He advanced to the second round of the French Open this year.
#2 Seed Capdeville Cruises
Paul Capdeville (CHI), last years LG&T Champion, cruised past Tatsuma Ito (JPN) 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the second round. Capdeville won the 2008 singles title, besting Rajeeve Ram 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. He is currently ranked 83 in the world.
#5 seed Carsten Ball (AUS) falls to Tim Smyczek (USA) 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Ball played his first ATP final last week, losing to Sam Querrey 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Smyczek was granted entry into the main draw on a special exemption granted by the USTA.
#6 Seed Levy Advances
Harel Levy (ISR) defeated Alex Bogdanovic (GBR) in straight sets 6-4, 7-5. Levy, currently ranked 150 in the world has been ranked as low as 30. Levy is the hero of the Israeli Davis Cup team that defeated Russia 4-1 in the quarterfinals. Levy won twice in that Davis Cup matchup, beating Igor Andreev (ranked 28 in the world) and Igor Kunitsyn (ranked 36 in the world). Israel will face Spain in September in the Davis Cup group semi-finals.
