Qualie Saturday, Ready to GO
Here we go, 9am start with qualifiers. Saturday is one of the best days for the tennis fanatic. Tennis on all courts for at least 5 hours. The true fanatic appreciates the abundance of the action and the need to pay attention to all courts for that special match, and some of the main draw guys sneaking in for practice.
In the qualifier, not any huge surprises. Cecil Mamitt, a well known name here, is the #2 seed. A few other familiar names... Marcus Sarstrand, the crowd likes; Luke Bourgeois, reminds you of Pat Rafter (or he did last time he was here);Brad Sherwood, trying to make his way again and the only locally well known name and face. Sherwood got a tough draw in the #1 seed.
Also have some wild cards for the main draw set.
Jesse Levine is a good catch. He went 24-1 in his first year as a Florida Gator this past year, got ITA Rookie of the year, and just got finished practicing with el numero uno... that's right, Roger Federer. The Fed invited him to practice for a while in July. We'll find out what that is about. Nonetheless, a serious young talent with a serious 1st year of college under his belt (#3 final ranking in college year).
Nikita Kryvonos is also an interesting one. Nikita came to NYC from the Ukraine when he was 13... he has since beaten up the Eastern section... kind of like Jeremy Wurtzman a few years ago, but recall Jeremy flew south when he got serious. Nikita still trains out of the NTC in Flushing, and calls Flushing home still. He did well in juniors, had a tough break when he was 16 with a leg infection, but still did remarkably well for a NY'r. He was part of the 2004 18s, a tough group which had Monfils and Murray along with some tough American competition. Nikita was a Davis Cup practice partner last year and he has 3 Challenger QF appearances in the last year; not bad considering he hasn't had the world of opportunities like some of his compatriots. And we can call him a New Yorker.
Also, you may notice some lemonade on sale tomorrow. "Alex's lemonade stand" will be present. They will be selling lemonade, with all proceeds to go towards their foundation and research for children's cancer research. Buy some.
