Look out for the Scud
That's right... Mark Philippoussis is going to be here in Binghamton!
The former #8 is in a tough spot after some injury problems and as a result wants matches before the US Open... who are we to say no. He was out with knee problems in late '04 and much of '05. Very similar story to James Blake last year, Mardy Fish this year, Andre Agassi in the past (and for those less enthusiastic fans, Curt Schilling in baseball)... Mark had a tough injury, and now is fighting to get back to the top and Binghamton happens to be along the way.
Mark is a 2-time finalist in Grand Slams and was previously ranked as high as #8 in the world. Mark's highlights include:
-22 ATP singles final appearances including Wimbledon ('03, losing to Federer) and US Open ('98, losing to Rafter)
-11 ATP singles titles including the International Series Newport event 2 weeks ago
-career best ranking was #8 in '99, shortly after the finals appearance at the US Open and winning his 1st Masters Series event at Indian Wells
- 4 wins against former #1 Pete Sampras, including an 8-6 5th set win in the French Open('00)
-4 wins against former #1 Jim Courier
-2 wins against former #1 Andre Agassi, including a 6-4 5th set win at Wimbledon('03)
-1 win against current #1 Roger Federer
-Reached 2nd week of play at Wimbledon for 6 straight years (4th round or better)
Mark has had a series of injuries over the last 2 years, including time off from October of '04 to February of '05 and then appeared in only 5 more tournaments in '05. As a result, his ranking dropped from #9 in '04 over 200 spots in '06. Philippoussis is back in form after gathering the title in Newport two weeks ago, his first since 2003.
Privileged is a good way to say it. This is becoming quite an annual event in Broome.
Mark's comments:
"As I continue to work my way up, the dBI Tennis Challenger is another opportunity to take a positive step forward in the rankings and I'm appreciative of Laurie for giving me this opportunity as I work my way back towards the top ten."
Laurie Bowen, Tournament Director, on the announcement:
"It is exciting to have Mark commit to our event. He is a very good player and we are privileged to have this opportunity."
Jeff Hirst, Media Director, on the announcement:
"I'm biased... big positive sports news. Easily the biggest name here in the last decade. I thought Andy Murray was great last year, and now Mark is coming... its great to see some of the organizers' hard work get an opportunity like this."
