The British Are Coming!

Andy Murray of Great Britain has been selected as a Wild Card for the main draw, along with Jeremy Wurtzman and Todd Widom.

Andy is a former world number two in the juniors ('04); winner of the US Open Boys' Singles Championships in '04; and became the youngest British player to play Davis Cup when he won his doubles match against Israel in the Davis Cup tie in March.

This summer's highlights for Andy include (from oldest to most recent):

Reached the semi final of the French Open Boys (junior) event

Reached the third round of the Queen's Club ATP International series event

Reached the 3rd round of Wimbledon, beating #14 seed Radek Stepanek and losing to #18 seed David Nalbandian in 5 sets

Won the Aptos Challenger and reached the 2nd round of 2 ATP International Series events in July

Still alive in the Vancouver Challenger this week (QFs)

Has had at least Quarterfinal or better results on the Challenger level, and at least 2nd rounds of ATP International Series (next level) since June

... now... really have to point out the significance of Andy. Some might not even know who he is (if they've been on vacation since June and didn't see Wimbledon). Have we ever had a player in Binghamton who has been on such a roll? If there have been, he slipped through the cracks. Andy has done QFs of Challengers, 2nd rounds of ATP International Series, 3rd round of Wimbledon, SFs of French Junior since May... that is it... another way to look at it ... the QF of Challengers is the "worst result" for him since May. That is just unheard of for a player to not have a "bad day" or "tough draw" to exit quickly one week here and there... very hard to make it through 2 Challengers, 3 ATP International Series, and 1 Grand Slam without having a 1st round loss at some point... just too many good players and other variables out there to do it. Even the best ranked player we've ever had has had a week with a 1st round loss in a Challenger this summer (and multiple 1st round exits on the International Series level last summer). Even the former #1 who was here on his way up lost in the 1st round of a Challenger and 2nd round of a futures event in that summer of being here. This is the best that have ever been here in Binghamton we are comparing. Andy's situation is definitely a unique one... one that Binghamton fans have a luxury box seat to witness. And this is FREE! For those who aren't coming out to Rec Park or don't think this is a big deal ... tell them to wake up and smell the tea!

Oh, and by the way... Bobby Reynolds is still going in the DC event (QFs) too. Did we mention we have guys who are on a roll coming into town...

1 day away from qualifying, 5 courts full of professional tennis players all going at full speed.
